The impact of anger and frustration on a child's self-confidence

Children naturally experience emotions - joy, excitement, curiosity. But what happens when these emotions turn to anger and frustration? How does this affect their self-confidence and their later lives?

When anger destroys self-confidence

Imagine your child is facing a challenge that is huge for them. It could be a difficult task at school, a new game that he doesn't grasp immediately, or a failure when he doesn't win at board games. You see the effort, then the frustration... and suddenly it all turns to anger. He throws his pencil, throws his toy on the ground, starts crying or even starts shouting.

And then what happens? We often say: "Don't get hysterical!", "Stop being so angry!", "No big deal, stop it!"

For him, it's a huge deal. A situation in which he feels helpless. If this helplessness is not understood, if it is not explained or helped, after a while it starts to blame yourself. He feels "bad", that "something is wrong with him" because adults don't understand his feelings. In the long run, this can lead to the following problems:

🏠 Home - The child becomes more and more withdrawn because he feels he has no right to feel. Or, on the contrary, it becomes more and more angry because it is the only way to get attention. 🎒 In school - It can take the form of shyness, performance anxiety or even excessive aggression. They are afraid to come forward for fear of being laughed at. He is afraid to try new things because he fears he will fail. ⏳ Adulthood - If a child learns that his feelings are "wrong" or "too much", he will repress them as an adult. In a workplace conflict, they dare not stand up for themselves. In a relationship, they cannot express when they are hurt. He may have self-esteem problems because deep down he still believes that "something is wrong with me".

The solution is not repression, but managing emotions

Anger and frustration are natural feelings. They should not be eliminated, but taught to are understandable, manageable and pronounceable. When a child feels that a parent accepts their feelings and gives them the tools to process them, their self-confidence is boosted. They will know that not by what it feels, but by what it does with it.

From Emotional Storm Management Workshop we use stories, games and creative tools to help children learn to understand and process their emotions.
