The pitfalls of tantrum management - what most parents get wrong

Tantrums are a challenge for most parents. Shouting, crying, knocking toys to the floor - it's hard to keep calm. And while we all want what's best for our children, we often unintentionally react in ways that make things worse.

But why is it so difficult to respond well? Because tantrums are an intense emotional state not only for the child, but also for the parent. A screaming child, the judging looks of others, the inner tension - many people feel they need to stop the tantrum immediately. As soon as possible, at any cost. And that's where we go wrong.

The most common mistakes during a tantrum

Shouting or punishment - When a parent tries to "discipline" a child by shouting, what he is really saying is: "Your feelings are not important, only my expectations matter." This creates fear in the child, but it doesn't help them learn to manage their emotions - it just teaches them that anger is bad and needs to be suppressed.

Full compliance - To avoid embarrassing scenes, many parents give in to tantrums. If he wants candy, he gets it. If he doesn't want to go to bed, he can stay up. When tantrums are used, the child learns that they are an effective tool. In the long run, this can lead to insecure, boundary-less behaviour.

Ignore - Some parents think that if they ignore the tantrum, it will go away on its own. But the child feels, "I don't matter. I'm not important." The tantrum is a cry for help - if there is no response, the child is left alone with his or her feelings and feels that no one understands.

What happens if hysteria is mishandled?

🏠 Home - Constant tension, increasingly frequent and intense tantrums. The parent loses control and the child tries even harder to assert his or her feelings.

🎒 In school - A lack of emotional control can make it difficult for the child to fit in, deal with conflict and develop self-doubt.

In the long term - You can become a repressive or even impulsive adult. They may not be able to handle stress well, and may have problems in relationships and at work.

The real solution: emotional support and learning

Tantrum management is not about "stopping" the child. It's about teaching them how to recognise and process their emotions. A child who understands his feelings will later become a more confident, balanced adult.

From Emotional Storm Management Workshop we teach children how to manage their emotions and feelings through stories, games and creative tools.
