Most parents have encountered the situation where their child throws a tantrum from one moment to the next. It could be in the middle of a toy shop when they don't get the toy they want, or at home when it's time for bed. But what is really behind the tantrum? Why does a child sometimes seem to explode for no reason?
The child is not the bad one, it's his/her emotions
We often think that tantrums are a deliberate manipulation of the child, but in fact they are a natural emotional reaction. Young children's brains are still developing and do not have the skills that we adults have to regulate our emotions.
Tantrums are usually caused by:
1️⃣ Communication difficulties - Children do not always know how to express in words what they feel or what they need. Frustration can surface.
2️⃣ Emotional overload - After a long day of stimulation, a child's nervous system can no longer cope with the new impulses.
3️⃣ Physical needs - Hunger, fatigue or even an unpredictable daily routine can lead to hysteria.
4️⃣ Finding boundaries - Children naturally try to find their limits and see how they react to certain behaviours.
What causes tantrums at home and at school?
🏠 Home - Parents often feel helpless and can easily get caught in a vicious circle where they react to their child's tantrums with indulgence or anger. In the long term, this leads to instability in the family.
🎒 In school - Lack of emotional control can lead to learning and social difficulties. Children can become frustrated with tasks and find it harder to fit into the community.
